Russian enterprise Prime Print in Moscow has placed an order with Koenig & Bauer for a second extension to the single-width Comet press line inaugurated in 2004 and first extended in 2007. In China, KBA customer Henan Daily Newspaper Group in Zhengzhou is adding a third KBA Comet press line to keep pace with soaring print volumes.
In the first quarter of 2011 the heavily utilised KBA Comet at Prime Print will receive an additional Pastoline reelstand and a four-colour tower with automatic colour and cut-off register controls, bringing the total to ten reelstands, eight printing towers and two KF 3 jaw folders. The 70,000cph Comet, which is controlled from four consoles incorporating EAE’s Print 4 job-scheduling and press-presetting system, has a 578mm (22.75in) cut-off and a web width variable from 635 to 800mm (25 - 31.5in). Maximum page count is 80 broadsheet or 160 tabloid pages, with up to 64 or 128 full-colour pages respectively.
The titles printed on the Comet at Prime Print include the Moscow edition of the popular Komsomol'skaya Pravda, which has a daily circulation of up to 160,000 copies, and a weekly publication, Tolstuschka, with 350,000 copies. Altogether Prime Print has a weekly output of some six million copies of various titles with a range of formats and circulations. In addition to newspaper, business and sports titles its product portfolio includes flyers, freesheets, community titles and TV guides.
Newspaper sales have been so brisk that Henan Daily Newspaper Group in Zhengzhou, China, has already exercised the option of an additional tower and folder for the KBA Comet it ordered at the beginning of the year, and which has not yet been delivered. When it comes on stream in early 2011 the press will comprise four four-high towers, four reelstands and two folders. Two KBA Comets with a total of eight towers and four folders have been in operation in the capital of Henan province since 2001 and 2005.
Printshop manager Chen Guo Sheng says: “The circulations of our own titles – the Henan Daily, Dahe Daily and Henan Commercial Daily – and of the many contract titles we print are growing rapidly, and there is a big demand for more colour. Hence the need for the pre-shipment extension."
The new 75,000cph Comet press line will be controlled from KBA ErgoTronic consoles with ink-key presetting and a remote diagnostics link.
