| Henan Daily orders third Comet press |

Early this month Henan Daily Newspaper Group in Zhengzhou, the capital of China’s most densely populated province, Henan, reaffirmed its successful association with Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) by signing a contract for a third Comet press line. The order follows the installation in 2001 and 2005 of two Comet press lines with a total of eight towers and four folders.

In December 2007 Diligent Media Corporation and DB Corporation, two enterprises owned by Indian media major Dainik Bhaskar Group (DB Group), signed a contract with KBA for seven Prisma newspaper presses, totalling 25 printing towers, for multiple locations. The first Prisma, a four-tower configuration, went live in December 2008 at the group’s Bangalore operation, and was followed in July 2009 by an eight-tower press in Jaipur. On 14 November last year the biggest installation, comprising three sections and nine towers, was officially inaugurated at the group’s production plant in Ahmedabad, northwest India. The ceremony was attended by over 2,000 representatives from politics, business and the media industry.

"We had exhausted every avenue of adding shifts and manning to increase productivity but realised that we had to add another press," says managing director Gareth Roberts. "The XL 75, which replaces the first SM 74 ten-colour we installed when we moved to this factory six years ago, will give us four additional (24 hour) days capacity a month through greater efficiency, but even this is not enough so we returned to Heidelberg for an SM 74-10-P, which is the perfect perfecting press for us, with it's redesigned feeder, inking and damping unit and the improved delivery. The investment in one replacement press and one additional press, a Speedmaster XL 75-10-P and an SM74-10-P respectively, is made on the basis of increased trading during 2009 and not just speculation about an upturn.

According to the Wall Street Journal’s September update of The Patent Board’s Patent Scorecard for manufacturers of heavy industrial equipment* (see attached), KBA ranked 13th among the top 50, well ahead of its rivals. Of the globally active European players listed, KBA was only beaten by fellow German enterprise Voith (no. 4) and Swiss lift manufacturer Schindler (no. 12). The high ranking reflects the group’s consistent focus on innovation as a pioneer of press engineering for the past 192 years.

Trading in counterfeit spare parts and printing press components not only causes enormous economic damage worldwide to manufacturers of printing machinery. Poor-quality counterfeit parts furthermore lastingly impair a printing system’s life cycle. Therefore, manroland has taken action to fight product piracy. Under the auspices of the VDMA, the company is currently doing so at the All in Print trade show in Shanghai, for example.
